After ecology surveys have been done it is often necessary to return to the site to follow up on recommendations. In this case a proposed building site was suitable for wildlife and also known to have been the location of important ruins.

Because the site was small and the habitat not the best for any species I decided the best way to proceed was to rescue animals during the vegetation clearance and topsoil stripping. This was done slowly over three days using a digger and hand tools and several voles and frogs were rescued.

It was interesting to work with the archaeologist who was also interested in the site and required deeper excavation in some places to expose buried walls and floors and I would be very interested to work alongside other specialisms in future.
